How does Catalyst crop the back of the patient surface?

During the patient import, c4D edits the imported structure from the structure set so that only the patient surface remains. This is achieved by deleting data points of the structure that share the same X and Y coordinate but have a lower Z coordinate. Thus, the higher data points remain, cutting away the back of the patient and leaving the surface of the patient as a reference structure.

In other words, the algorithm looks at the surface from the top view, only keeps the data points that are directly visible and removes the points that are “hidden” by other points.
